About Shri Yamuna Maharani Mandir
Who is Shri Yamuna Maharani?
In Puranic literature, Yamuna is the daughter of Surya, the sun god, and Sanjna, the goddess of clouds. She is the twin sister of Yama, the god of death and dharma. Her other brothers include Vaivasvata Manu (the first man), the Ashvin twins, and Shani. She was said to be Surya's favorite child. The name 'Yamuna' itself has a story: unable to bear her husband's dazzling radiance, Sanjna would close her eyes in his presence. Offended, Surya declared their son would be Yama (restraint) and their daughter Yamuna. In later literature, she is also called Kalindi, after her earthly origin at Mount Kalinda (Yamunotri). The Agni Purana describes her as dark in complexion, standing on a tortoise (her vahana), holding a water pot.

Yamuna Dharamraj Temple
According to tradition, on the day of Bhai Dooj (Yama Dwitiya), Yamuna invited her brother Yama for a meal at the banks of the river. Touched by her love, Yama offered her any boon she desired.
Yamuna, having no material wishes, asked only that her ghats be radiant with the presence of brothers and sisters every Bhai Dooj. Yama granted this, adding that any sibling pair who bathes in the Yamuna on this day would be freed from the fear of death. This is why Vishram Ghat and the Yamuna-Dharmraj Temple witness some of the largest Bhai Dooj gatherings in India.
